How to Match Body Butter to the Perfume You Already Wear

How to Match Body Butter to the Perfume You Already Wear

You do not need an exact matching lotion to layer perfume well. A body butter can work with your fragrance in three ways: share a note, share a family, or create a deliberate contrast.

Method 1: match one important note

If your perfume is built around vanilla, choose a vanilla or amber body butter underneath it. If rose is central, a rose or clean-musk base is an easy place to start. Shared notes make the combination feel connected even when the two products are not identical.

Method 2: match the fragrance family

Fresh citrus fragrances usually pair easily with citrus, tea, ginger, musk and clean woods. Gourmands work naturally with vanilla, coffee, praline, amber and warm spice. Florals can be reinforced with rose, jasmine or magnolia, or softened with musk.

Method 3: use contrast on purpose

A fresh fragrance over vanilla can produce a bright opening with a warmer base. A sweet perfume over clean musk can feel less dense. A fruity fragrance over woods can create more structure.
